The Penguins Everyone Comes to Cape Town to See
You hear them before you see them.
Above the sound of the waves comes a distinctly undignified braying call. Then, somewhere between the rocks, a little black-and-white figure waddles into view.
Let’s be honest, if you’re coming to Cape Town, seeing the African penguins is probably already on your list. And rightly so.
At Boulders Beach, near Simon’s Town, you can watch African penguins swimming in the clear waters of False Bay, sunning themselves on the rocks and going about their daily business on one of Cape Town’s most beautiful stretches of coastline. Boulders is one of the best-known places to see African penguins in Cape Town.
More than just a cute photo
The African penguin is the only penguin species native to Africa, living along the southern African coastline in South Africa and Namibia.
They were once known as “jackass penguins” because of their unmistakable donkey-like bray. Listen for a few minutes and you’ll understand why.
They’re also fascinating to watch. African penguins are excellent swimmers, diving in search of fish such as sardines and anchovies. Pairs can form long-term bonds and return to the same nesting areas, while devoted parents take turns caring for their chicks.
During one of our visits, several chicks had hatched, and watching the adults tending to them was one of those simple wildlife moments that stays with you.
Making a day of it
Boulders Beach is usually part of a Cape Peninsula day out, alongside Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope. But it doesn’t have to be a quick stop on a packed itinerary.
If the weather’s good, make a day of it. Swim at Boulders Beach, explore the coastline around Simon’s Town and experience one of those wonderfully Cape Town moments where wildlife and a beautiful beach come together. Boulders is a sheltered swimming spot, protected by the large granite boulders that give the beach its name.
