West Coast South Africa Winter Getaway: A Hidden Gem

At Cactusberry Lodge we recently discovered a West Coast South Africa winter getaway with beaches, wildlife, and coastal charm. We want to share our weekend visit to Shelley Point and West Coast National in the hope of inspiring your travels!

In July, we soaked up the magic of South Africa’s West Coast in all its winter glory. With blue skies, sunshine and temperatures touching 16°C, we explored one of the most underrated seasons in the Cape: winter by the sea. Winter on the West Coast offers a different kind of magic, slow and quietly beautiful. Fewer crowds, crisp, clean air, and endless beaches make it a hidden gem of the season.

First up, Shelley Point, St Helena Bay, where long walks along empty beaches took us to the Stompneus Point Lighthouse. Some of us even braved the calm waters for paddleboarding. For history buffs, Vasco Da Gama’s fleet landed in St. Helena Bay on his historic first journey to India on November 7, 1497. A large statue commemorates the memory.

Next, Grotto Bay via the scenic West Coast National Park, where we immersed ourselves in the park’s vibrant history and landscapes. Wild coastline meets rich plant life, gently lapped by Saldanha Bay. This peaceful stretch reminded us just how beautifully raw the West Coast can be. As we ventured further, wildlife sightings added to the wonder:
• Ostriches strutting across fynbos-dotted hills
• Bontebok grazing lazily in the distance
• A mongoose darting unexpectedly across the road
• And an incredible variety of birdlife — truly making the park a paradise for bird-lovers

To end the weekend on a high note, we enjoyed a spectacular late lunch at Trattoria Maranello. Highly recommended for their thin-crust pizza, seasonal specials, and unbeatable views, it was the perfect place to watch the sun dip below the horizon over Melkbosstrand.
